A season full of surprises!
Dear Friends,
“I’m 44-years-old this year!” TfT would say, and then add, “I’m 44 this year and proud of it. Doing theatre for 44 years, for any company, is quite a feat. But doing it for 44 years, in French, in Toronto: I deserve a medal!”
I am proud as well. I am very proud of our theatre’s evolution. And with that, I present our 44th season, my 15th at TfT.
This year we present some new, current works: two comedies, two dramas, and bring back a play that has been on tour but has not aged a bit.
You know, when I was young, I worked in my father’s bookstore. He was a great guy, always in a good mood. He loved to say that he never worked a day in his life, that he was always happy in “his” store. In fact, he was the smile of Main Street in Hull, my hometown... now known as Gatineau.
I’m telling you this because it’s a little like the way I see Théâtre français de Toronto, a theatre that has not aged a bit.
We launch the season with Le Dieu du carnage (God of Carnage), a comedy that draws in broad strokes an explosive situation that began in an innocuous manner. Next, we offer you Une Maison face au nord (A House Facing North); so many people have told me that they had to see it again and many have told me that they would like to see it. Then, we have the great play Zone by Marcel Dubé, revisited by Jean Stéphane Roy and La Liste (The List), starring the marvellous Sylvie Drapeau and written by Jennifer Tremblay, who received the Governor General's Award for this script. And I have the pleasure of ending the season by staging L'Emmerdeur (The Pain in the Ass), by Francis Veber. It gives you something to enjoy and something to think about. Les Zurbains returns for teenagers and we will introduce Aurel aux quatre vents (Aurel of the Four Winds), for children. I think with all this, it's well worth getting a subscription! I can't wait to welcome you at the theatre that has the loveliest smile in Toronto.
